A scholarship is usually a monetary award based on criteria given by the awarding party. It can be given on basis of academic
merit, athletic ability, financial needs or other criteria specific to the group giving the award. For example, there are many
scholarships available for only a specific minority including African Americans minority groups and women. Sometimes college
scholarships are given in a contest manner.

PREPARATION FOR 2013 GCE ORDINARY AND ADVANCE LEVEL EXAMS

Preparations for the 2013 GCE Ordinary and Advance levels end of course examinations have reached their peaks with only a month to go.

What happens in June when candidates will be writing and in September when the results shall be published  all depends on what the candidates are doing now in terms of last minute preparations.

I have taught it necessary to present to all candidates a comprehensive plan for success in examinations. Click here to find out more.

SOUTH AFRICA BEGINS SINGLE-DOSE HIV ARV DRUG ROLL-OUT

About 180 000 HIV-positive South Africans will soon start taking fixed-dose combination antiretroviral (ARV) medication, which involves one tablet instead of three to five pills a day, reducing the risk of patients defaulting from treatment.

Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi launched the single-dose ARVs at Phedisong 4 Community Health Clinic in Ga-Rankuwa outside Pretoria on Monday.

The fixed-dose combination (FDC) ARV will be given to newly diagnosed HIV-positive people, HIV-positive pregnant women and breast-feeding mothers.

Motsoaledi said the department had revised the guidelines for prevention of mother-to-child transmission, paediatric and adult treatment due to changes in the treatment regime for FDC ARVs.

The fixed-dose combination - containing emtricitabine, efavirenz and tenofovir - is a multiple antiretroviral drug combined into a single pill, which helps reduce pill burden. It is easy to take, highly effective and in no way inferior to taking three individual drugs.

Pregnant HIV-positive women
"We also decided that all pregnant HIV-positive women will be started on the FDC, regardless of their CD4 count. They will stay on treatment until they complete breastfeeding. They will continue on treatment should their CD4 count be 350 or below," Motsoaledi said.

"More than 7 000 doctors and nurses have been updated on the new guidelines and we've ensured that at least one [or two] health care professionals in each facility have been updated."

In addition, more than 200 master trainers have been trained, including those based at regional training centres and those stationed at the department's development partners.

Eligible patients will get one month's supply of FDC pills for the first three months.

"They will see their clinicians monthly for three months so that they can be carefully monitored. Thereafter, if they are stable they, will be given three months' supply of FDCs.

"From June onwards, all other stable, non-complicated patients will be switched to FDCs after consultation with their clinicians," he said.

A pregnancy register has been introduced at selected sites to conduct surveillance on adverse drug reactions. Motsoaledi explained that it was standard clinical practice worldwide to monitor drug reactions.

"We need to carefully monitor reactions of patients on drugs and take action when we see any systematic adverse events."

'Treatment without disruption'
Motsoaledi said he was confident that they had sufficient supplies of ARVs for all patients who are eligible for the FDC pills as the department had been working with three suppliers to ensure that they are able to supply them the requisite quantities without disruption.

"In order to ensure uninterrupted supply of ARV medicines on the new tender, the national Department of Health has initiated monthly supplier meetings to discuss forecasted demand for the following three months so that manufacturers can plan their manufacturing accordingly," he said.

Data has been collected from provincial depots on a weekly basis and analysed in order to identify weaknesses in the supply chain, which are then addressed either with the province or the supplier depending on the nature of the problem.

To date, 389 857 units of FDC pills have been supplied to the provinces. A further 915 000 units are expected to be delivered during the course of April.

The volume units are expected to increase to 1.5-million per month by September this year to allow all patients - including switching existing, stable patients currently taking three individual ARV drugs - to have access to the pills.

Currently, 1.7-million patients are on ARV treatment, and the department hopes to expand this to 2.5-million by the end of 2014.

One of the first beneficiaries of the FDC pills, Andrew Mosane from Ga-Rankuwa Zone 4, is the Gauteng secretary for the Treatment Action Campaign. Mosane said the new drug would make his life easier.

"It's going to be less stress than taking five tablets a day, and everybody will have access to it. [This will] improve peoples' lives," he said.

ILLEGAL SCHOOL EQUALS ILLEGAL DIPLOMA

Register with in a recognized school to obtain authentic diploma. Corruption begins in clandestine schools!

The Minister of basic Education ordered the closure of some 800 schools operating illegally within the country.
Three main motives led her to take this decision
- these schools were not declared
- they did not have attestations of creation
- they did not have authorizations to go operational

The affected regions  are as follows:
-North-West:---------------------------------370 clandestine schools
-Centre:---------------------------------------146 clandestine schools
-Littoral:--------------------------------------135 clandestine schools
-South-West:----------------------------------128 clandestine schools
-West:-----------------------------------------59 clandestine schools

Similar measures by her colleague of Secondary Education is highly awaited.
It is estimated that hundreds of private colleges in the country are operating illegally.
 Illegal Schools are corrupt schools!

2012 GCE Ordinary and Advace Level results delayed

Publication of the 2012 GCE ordinary and Advanced level results is delayed due to a fire disaster that razed the results of thousands of candidates in the Extreme North of the country.

Some 2411 candidates shall re-write the GCE Ordinary and Advanced Level in Mora, Extreme North Region with headquarter in Maroua. This follows a fire incident this week that affected the Administrative building of Government High School (Lycee Classique) Mora where corrected scripts of these examinations from some twelve centres were kept.
The Minister of secondary Education (MINESEC) today signed an Order authorising a special session of the examination to be held in the affected centers to enable victims to re-write their papers. The Director General of Public Examinations in the Ministry said everything possible would be done for the special session to commence from Tuesday July third to July seventeen. He added that only candidates registered in the affected centres would be allowed to sit in for the examinations.

Cameroon to become a massive Construction site in 2012

President Paul Biya, winner of the october 9th presidential election has reitirated his promise that Cameroon will become a massive construction site in 2012. The morthan three million voters who renewed confidence in Mr. Paul Biya as President of the Republic are very satisfied to see that Biya was keeping to his promise after winning the election.
Cameroonians are anxious to witness the swearing in of President Paul Biya by the National Assembly for him to begin realising his socio-economic plan of action.

Chairman Ni John Furu Ndi Accepts results of Presidential Election

The chairman of the largest opposition party in Cameroon Ni John Furu Ndi, has once more surprised some of his millitants by acknowledging the outcome of the october 9th presidential election which incombent president Paul biya won with a land slide victory. Many of his millitants were not surprised by Furu Ndi's announcement because this is not the first time he is taking a decisions that is contrary to actions. Only this year, Mr John has taken many contradictory decisions. He began by refusing to recognise the composition of Elections Cameroon (ELECAM) insisting that its members were not neutral. Then he called on his millitants not to register for the presidential election. He also vowed not to stand for the election. His millitants and others were taken aback when Mr. Furu sudenly took a U-turn to stand for the election which was still organised by ELECAM calling on his millitants to register massively.
Such attitudes of Mr. John have led to suspicion by his millitants that he might have been bought over by the ruling party and its candidate Mr. Paul Biya. In any case, Mr. John has proven that he is far from being qualified to become a future president of the Republic.

Massive Recruitment of jobless youths continue in Cameroon

Organisating the presidential election did not disturb the determination of government to employ thousands of jobless cameroonians. The recruitment continued and is still going on after the publication of the election results.
With incombent Paul Biya wining land slide, this is the time to focus, morethan ever, on job creation through public investment and support to small and medium size enterprises. Time for economic revival.
Many people who wanted their uncles and inlaws to take power voted for them; a vast majority voted for development.
No matter who you voted for, this is the time for you to join hands in nation building. Voting was through secret balloting and who you vote or did not vote does not show on your face. Come let's build Cameroon.

CAMEROON: PAUL BIYA WINS LAND SLIDE IN FREE FAIR AND TRANSPARENT ELECTIONS

BIG SHAME ON ALL THOSE TRIBALISTIC BIGGOTS WHO VOTED THE SDF
A free fair and transprent election (by international standards) has seen incombent President Paul Biya wining a landslide victory. Twenty-three candidates with the same number of political parties participated in the Presidential election of October 9, 2011. Mr. Paul Biya, candidate for the Cameroon Peoples Democratic Movement (CPDM) came out victorious with 77.9% of the total votes counted. About four and a half million electors voted. The European Union (EU), Commonwealth, African Union (AU), CEMAC and many deplomatic missions deployed observers of the ground to monitor the conduct of the election and all expressed satisfation at the end. This victory gives Biya and the CPDM party seven more years at the helm of the country.

Eight million treated mosquito nets to fight malaria in Cameroon

The fatal malaria parasite and its and its notorious transmitter vector the mosquito might soon become extinct through prolonged starvation. At least, this is as far as the sate of Cameroon is concerned where the government is about to distribute some eight million (8,000,000) treated mosquito nets across the country.

The nationwide campaign is as a result of significant achievement recorded in the pilot phase during which mosquito nets proved to drastically reduce the spread of the deadly disease by almost a third. For close to a decade now, all pregnant women are given free treated mosquito nets in hospitals and health centres.

Identification of beneficiaries is ongoing throughout the country to sort out all those in need of mosquito nets and also to be able to use this data to evaluate the efficiency of the program. The plan is to supply a treated mosquito net per two persons per household.

Female anopheles mosquitoes are known to require a blood meal as a vital ingredient in its reproductive process. As the mosquito feeds on human blood it transmits the deadly malaria parasite from one person to the other. Some four million people die of malaria every year, most of them Africans.

Thirteen thousand (13,000) young graduates already recruited in Public service

Did you hear your name? Some thirteen thousand (13,000) young graduates have already been recruited into the Public service. Thousands more to follow! The list of some 5873 new recruits was published today 24/09/2011 bringing the total number employed so far to 13,000.
The lucky young men and women shall be integrated into the Public Service as Contract workers (agents contractuels). It is important to state that this recruitment targets superior technicians of all walks of life.
The massive recruitment falls within the framework the greater ambitions policies of the Head of State which aims at transforming Cameroon into an emerging nation by 2035.
Many are already nursing fears that with the current financial crises in the developed world, such a dream is far fetched. However, State authorities argue that the annual growth figurs registered are not proving them wromg.

Presidential campaign launched, 23 candidates returned, fifteen days to go...

Official campaigns for up coming Prsidential election have been launched on 24/09/2011. In all twenty-three (23) political parties and candidates have been approved and are going to compete for the race of the highest office in the country. Seven million two hundred  thousand voters have been registered and will cast their votes on October 9, 2011.
The Independent Electoral Commission, Elections Cameroon (ELECAM), is busy carrying out last minute preparations which is mainly the distribution of voters cards to electors within and without the country and the deploiment of the necessary material.
Critics beleive that the time for distribution of voters card is too small and many electors might not get their cards before that day. To this, ELECAM officials reassured us that the organisation has enough agents and means on the ground to take care of the distribution exercise.
The Administration on its part is doing everything possible to ensure that public peace and order are maintained to enable electors to cast their votes in an atmosphere of total scerenity.

What kind of scholarship do you want?

What kind of scholarship do you want? This is a question you must find answers to before you begin a thorough scholarship search on the internet. Many will see this as a silly question to ask as no one would opt for a partial scholarship when a complete scholarship is available.
The best scholarship is undoubtably a full scholarship. A full scholarship takes care of all the charges related to a given course. Some scholarship awards cover only a part of a course. These are known as partial scholarships. These may take care of part of your tution fees. A scholarship may still be considered as partial even though it covers all of the tution fees. Partial or full are relative terms and could vary depending on what is considered as the whole and what is considered as the part.

The richest man in Cameroon and Central Africa (CEMAC Zone)

The richest man or woman has to be defined from a given perspective in a specified geographical location. The richest men and women in any country of the world are role models for the young and those who are still stuggling to realise their dreams. Some  countries boast of scores of the richest men and and women, others have only a few yet others have no one of the close to two hundred richest men and women of the world.
The richest man in cameroon and the Central african Sub region is said to be El-hadji Baba Ahmadu Dan-pullo  of Ndawara. This Fulani businessman of the North West Region of Cameroon is beleived to be by far the wealthiest man in the  country. The wealth of Baba dan-pullo skyrocketed since he bought over the Cameroon Tea Estate, CTE, from government. Read more...

What do you look for in a Presidential Election?

Number of Political parties?
Number of candidates?
Quality of Candidates?
As far the Presidential election of 2011 is concerned you have a long list of choices to ponder with;
  • Moerthan 200 political parties;
  • About fifty candidates;
  • Very popular candidates and those known only to their kids and kins;
Democracy is very much about plurality of choice. No cameroonians would lack a choice to make.
The quality of the candidate is what matters to me. Who will deliver the goods? This is a crucial question all voters must ask. Is a candidate experienced enough to continue implementing the ongoing socio economic and political processes or are we voting for someone to come and need to go through the learning or experimental period therby taking us back to level one?
Are we casting our votes infavour of tribalistic, selfish and warlike individuals? My brothers and sisters theses are crucial questions we have to seek answers to before casting our votes.

52 FILES RECEIVED, 17 REJECTED, SUPREME COURT RULINGS AWAITED

As the National Printing Press (SOPECAM) invites some ten candidates confirm colors and emblems on their ballot papers, the race for the 2011 presidential election in Cameroon seems to take a different twist. Out of a total of fifty-two (52) applications for candidature received by ELECAM,  seventeen (17) have been rejected pending a ruling by the Supreme Court acting as the Constitutional Court. The motives for reject range from unpaid taxes, five million francs deposit to failure to by some candidates to meet with the condition of staying for a period of 12 uninterrupted months in the country before depositing their candidature. The Supreme Court has up to Septembre 21st to confirm or to rule against these irregularities .
Official campaigns are expected to begin on Septembre the 25th.

ENS Bambili (ENSAB) Teachers Training Recruitment Exam Concours published

Thousnads of applicants are rushing to find out their status following the publication of the results of entrance examinations into the Grammer and Technical sections (HTTTC) of the Teachers Training College (ENS) of the University of Bamenda last Friday. Each year thousnds of job seekers are recruited into this school to make up for the acute shortages of professional teachers in secondary and high schools around the country.
Geography, Physics, Mathematic, Biology, Chemistry, Economics, History, Modern Letters, French...are the main subjects offered in the college. This year about a hundred positions were open for competition by qualified candidates. However, morethan ten thousand ended up sitting in for the entrance examinations. Many with awaited results of the Advanced level certificate.
Successful candidates are expected to undergo three years of  intense training in the college before graduating as public service teachers of government colleges.
The acute shortages of trained teachers in the country is largely as a result of the brain drain phenomenon whereby government trained teachers, doctors and nurses emigrate to the west (United States and Europe) where they are paid higher salaries. Unfortunately, even when these unpatriotic compatiots are leaving for greener pastures abroad after costing the state millions in training, they manipulate to keep their salaries in Cameroon still flowing. Due to bureaucracy and uncomputerised system, it often takes some time to uncover such frauds.

Results of Presidential election in Cameroon by October 15

Who is your candidate? The date for voting a new president in Cameroon is now known. The electoral college was convened by a Presidential Decree on Tuseday August 30th fixing October 10 as the day cameroonians would go to the poles to vote a president. In accordance with the law, presidential hopefuls have five days from the day the this decree convenes the electoral college to deposit their files. In addition to a number of legal documents, each application file must be accompanied by a deposit of five million francs (5,000,000 francs CFA).

The big difference in this election is that it is going to be entirely managed by an independent electoral commission, Elections Cameroon (ELECAM). This organisation receives application files of candidates approves or reject them. aplications could be deposited at its regional offices or in its central office in Yaounde. The director of the organisation issued a communique on last Friday informing the public that ELECAM offices shall be exceptionally open on Saturday the 3rd and Sunday the 4th to receive application filles of candidates.
As Cameroonnians multiply calls for President Biya to stand for reelection in the upcoming presidential poles, morethan fifteen presidential candidates have deposited their files. This number is expected to increase by tomorrow.
The Presidential Decree coincided with Eid el Fitr Celeberations in Cammeroon after fasting for a period of one month. Muslim used the opportunity of this grand occasion to pray for peace before, during and after the presidential poles.

www.minfopra.gov.cm-census for civil servants-fonctionaires

While results for the recruitment of 25000 young graduates announced by the government are highly awaited by thousands of jobless applicants, the Ministry of Public Service and Administrative Reforms have lunched an online census of public agents excluding those of the judiciary and the armed forces.
This exercise is one in a series of highly acclaimed measures by government to modernize the Public Service and cleanse the system from fake workers and control the massive fraud affecting it. A series of censuses have been done since 2005 leading to the flushing out of hundreds of ghost workers from the system. Millions of francs CFA have been recovered since then.
ARE YOU A CIVIL SERVANT? CLICK HERE TO FILL YOUR CENSUS FORM
The current exercise has exposed a great challenge facing Cameroonians - access to the Internet. Most of the hundreds of thousands of Cameroonian Public agents would have to lineup in front of cyber cafes to fill the census forms online. However, this presents a huge opportunity to operators of cyber cafes who will witness a tremendous increase in daily incomes.

2011 GCE ORDINARY AND ADVANCED LEVELS' RESULTS SOON

The Cameroon GCE Board is striving to improve its performance in handling the official end of year examinations. This apparent change in character from an organization once marred by laxity and inertia to one that is efficient and can be reckoned with is observed in the early publication of its results in recent years.

The Cameroon General Certificate of Education Board was created to carter for secondary education evaluation for the mainly English speaking Cameroonians from the North West and South West regions as well as other Cameroonians interested in such Examinations. The GCE Board organizes, corrects and publishes two main end of courses examinations; the GCE Ordinary Level (GCE O/L) which is taken on the fifth year of secondary education and the GCE Advanced Level taken on the seventh and final year of secondary education and recently the Baccalaureate . Since its creation in the early 90s, it is only in recent years that the GCE Board is showing signs to justify its raison d'etre as conceived by the Government.
The recent progress registered by the Board, however, is seen by critics as being only a step in a journey of a thousand miles awaiting it. Some critics challenge the Board to introduce Scholarship schemes to encourage brilliant students to further their education at higher levels.
In a developing country like Cameroon where income levels are extremely low, most students either end up as dropouts or face financial setbacks in furthering their education beyond the secondary school level. Some years back, the Government of Cameroon used to award scholarships to students who performed brilliantly in the GCE examinations.
This suspension of award of scholarships to bright students came at a time when unemployment was reaching its peaks amongst the youths of the country. Bad governance and the economic crises that swept across most African countries were the main causes of this situation. As a result, youths resorted to all sorts of malpractices. The idea of odd jobs suddenly disappeared in the society as the job hungry youths spared no income generating opportunity.
Recently, the country began experiencing some economic revival with the attainment of the completion point of the HIPC initiative. A series of massive recruitments into the public service were recently carried out by the government. The massive recruitments were meant for priority sectors such as health, education and agriculture. Teachers, doctors and nurses were recruited in their thousands. The government has reportedly adopted a long-term development plan but this without loosing sight of the millennium development goals which developing countries have committed themselves to achieve by 2015.
The President of the Republic of Cameroon, HE Paul Biya has also instituted sweeping reforms to improve upon the country's governance system. Various anti-corruption watchdogs have been put in place and the results of their actions so far is appalling. A series of arrests of high ranking state officials have been registered and procedures are ongoing (though slow due to the international protocols involved) to recover the funds they embezzled.

Cameroon G.C.E. Board June 2011 G.C.E. Advance and Ordinary Level Results

The 16-year-old Cameroon General Certificate of Education (GCE) Board shall release its 2011 Examinations results by July ending. The results would be first read on National radio beginning, as usual with the Advanced Level (A/L).the GCE board is unlikely to publish the 2011 Ordinary and Advanced Level results on the internet in spite of repeated calls from students and some parents for it to do so.

Cameroon G.C.E. Board June 2011 Results on the Internet

Despite increasing calls from students and parents across the country and the Diaspora, Cameroon G.C.E. Board is still reluctant to publish GCE results on the Internet. The widely held view that theCameroon General Certificate of Education, GCE, Board, published the 2007 results on the Internet has been refuted by The Deputy Registrar of the Board, Mathew Akoko. Speaking to the press in Bamenda after a meeting with GCE Superintendents and Chiefs of Centre, Akoko said the act was committed by some young men in Molyko who later apologised in writing, promising never to repeat it.
Akoko was defending the Board against accusations of bad faith from publishers of local newspapers who bought the soft copies of the GCE Ordinary and Advanced Levels from the Board and suffered severe loss because most of the candidates read their results on the Internet.
"We explained this to the publishers. We will ensure that this does not repeat itself," he assured the press. The Registrar said he was in Bamenda to sensitise invigilators, Superintendents and Chiefs of Centres on the necessity to conduct the exams with fairness to ensure that all candidates write under the same conditions. The Deputy Registrar said if his institution wanted to publish the results on the Internet, it would have used its own website. Akoko blamed the men for revealing the results online because it could help ill-intended individuals to tamper with them.
The Board said in future it would incorporate a copy of the student's photograph in the examination certificate. This would ensure security of examinations and stop the sale of stolen certificates.
He also described as false information that journalists were barred from GCE marking centres. Journalists, he said, are free to visit the marking centres but they can't be allowed into the examination rooms because they would distract candidates.
"They are free to meet the authorities in charge and ask questions on the conduct of the exams," he said.

Publishing G.C.E. Ordinary and Advanced Levels’ Results on the Internet

Ever since the Cameroon GCE Board was established and as more Cameroonians got access to the Internet a few years later, many have desired to have results of its examinations published on the Internet. I think many reasons could be advanced for and against the publishing of GCE results on the Internet. Find here some reasons why GCE results should or should not be published on the Internet.

Motives in favour of publishing GCE results on the Internet

The following could favour the publication of of results of public examinations like the GCE on the Internet.

  1. Easy and fast access to the results by those interested.
  2. It will encourage more Cameroonians to get used to the Internet and appreciate the importance of Information and Communication Technologies' knowledge.
  3. More jobs will be created as the owners of cyber cafes witness a sudden increase in incomes.

Motives against the publishing of GCE results on the Internet

Here are the main reasons I think play against the publication of Results of major examinations like the GCE on the Internet.

  1. The results could easily be tempered with by some unscrupulous individuals if published on the Internet.
  2. Students and parents could be exploited by cyber cafes that may charge exorbitant sums for Internet credits.
  3. Greater exposure to the Internet shall imply greater exposure to scams and inappropriate sites for teenagers.
  4. By publishing on local journals, the GCE Board is indirectly boasting the reading culture which is currently low. Publishing on the Internet will exclude this incentive.
  5. Publishing on the Internet will mean frustrating and weakening the local news papers.
  6. The Internet can hardly replace the radio; therefore reading the results over the radio encourages Cameroonians to cultivate a habit of listen to the radio.
  7. Publishing the results on the Internet may diminish the credibility of the country and the various certificates abroad.
  8. It’s an opportunity for local news papers that publish the results to register a sudden increase in sales and grow.
  9.  It’s a source of revenue for the GCE Board when news papers and radio stations buy soft copies of the results.

The best ways to have your GCE 2011 results

The best ways of having access to your GCE 2010 results are the following:-

  • Listen keenly to the National radio station.
  • Buy a local news paper that has the results. For example, the daily Cameroon Tribune
  • If you are in or around Buea, go to the GCE Board headquarters where the results are pasted on the notice Board. Note that at the Board you will be confronted by a large crowd.
  • You can call or text a friend who has access to the results and esquire from them.

Why the restriction against publication of GCE results on the Internet?

From the previous analyses, the ban is therefore necessary: -

  • To check fraud at that level of educational qualification.
  • To reduce the rate of exposure to internet scams.
  • To minimise exploitation of interested students and their parents by cybercafes.
  • A source of income for the Board by selling the results to journals and radio stations.
  • Boast the credibility of the country and the various certificates abroad.
  • It encourages Cameroonians to read news papers and listen to the radio and;
  • Last but not the least, moral concerns over exposure of teenagers to pornographic sites.

FREE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR 2011

Are you seeking for a scholarship? Generally, scholarships are awarded for a variety of reasons that fall into certain categories. However, other scholarships are awarded on the bases of criteria that could not be easily categorized. These may be for reasons of the student's association with the objectives of the sponsoring organization. For example, some corporations give scholarships to their employees' children or based upon academic success. Some scholarships have a "bond" requirement. Recipients may be required to work for a particular employer for a specified period of time or to work in rural or remote areas; otherwise they may be required to repay the value of the support they received from the scholarship. This is particularly the case with teacher training scholarships and currently with health and medical education scholarships for people from or prepared to work in rural and remote areas in certain countries.

AMERICA'S BEST HIGH SCHOOLS, 2013

By Kelsey Sheehy | U.S. News
The importance of a strong high school education cannot be overstated.
Good schools challenge students academically, while giving them ample opportunity to explore their interests. This combination can set teens up to succeed long after graduation. By contrast, subpar schools can leave students struggling to make the transition from high school to college or the workforce.
The 2013 Best High Schools rankings, released April 23, 2013, can help parents wade through the ever expanding options of public high schools. U.S. News collected data on more than 21,000 public high schools from 49 states and the District of Columbia. (Nebraska did not report enough data to be included in the rankings.)
U.S. News joined forces with the American Institutes for Research, a D.C.-based organization, to evaluate schools on overall student performance on state-mandated assessments, as well as how effectively schools educated their black, Hispanic and economically disadvantaged students. Performance on Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate exams was then used to determine the degree to which schools prepare students for college-level work.
Schools were ranked within each state, as well as on a national stage, so families can see how their public high school stacked up against rivals within the community and across the country. In the national rankings, 500 schools earned gold medals, 1,790 were awarded silver and 2,515 took home bronze.
The School for the Talented and Gifted in the Dallas Independent School District retained its distinction as the best public high school in the country. BASIS Tucson, in Arizona, climbed the ranks from No. 6 to claim the No. 2 spot, replacing Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Virginia, which fell to fourth. The International School in Washington held onto its No. 9 ranking. (See last year's rankings on Yahoo! Homes.)
Six schools made significant gains to join the top 10 this year. The biggest movers were Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology in Georgia and BASIS Scottsdale in Arizona. Both schools opened their doors during the 2007-2008 school year, and each made a big splash with its first full graduating class, moving from no numerical rank to third and fifth, respectively.
Pine View School in Florida climbed 24 spots to stake its claim as the No. 6 ranked public high school in the country, and Loveless Academic Magnet Program High School in Alabama followed suit, jumping from No. 32 to No. 7. Biotechnology High School in New Jersey (No. 8) and Academic Magnet High School in South Carolina (No. 10) also joined the top-ranked high schools, gaining nine and 17 places, respectively.
While the top 10 public high schools are peppered across nine different states, California leads the pack with close to 28 percent of the nearly 1,800 eligible schools in the state earning gold and silver medals. Maryland followed with roughly 26 percent of the 226 medal-eligible schools in the state designated as gold and silver.
Nearly 41 percent of the gold medal schools across the country receive Title I funding, federal funds that support low-income students. Almost 70 percent of the top 500 schools are located in or near large cities.
Charter and magnet schools, which typically accept a limited number of students either through a lottery or application process, accounted for 145 of the top 500 schools. Because these schools tend to have flexible curriculums and draw upon a narrower swath of students – magnet schools in particular use a competitive process to draw the more academically gifted students – U.S. News also ranked these programs separately.
BASIS Tucson, Gwinnett and BASIS Scottsdale topped the Best Charter Schools rankings, with Pacific Collegiate School in California and International Studies Charter High School in Florida rounding out the top five.
Loveless Academic Magnet and Academic Magnet High School topped the Best Magnet Schools rankings, followed by the Maine School of Science and Mathematics in third and Carnegie Vanguard High School in Texas taking fourth. Michigan's International Academy claimed the No. 5 spot.
