The fatal malaria parasite and its and its notorious transmitter vector the mosquito might soon become extinct through prolonged starvation. At least, this is as far as the sate of Cameroon is concerned where the government is about to distribute some eight million (8,000,000) treated mosquito nets across the country.
The nationwide campaign is as a result of significant achievement recorded in the pilot phase during which mosquito nets proved to drastically reduce the spread of the deadly disease by almost a third. For close to a decade now, all pregnant women are given free treated mosquito nets in hospitals and health centres.
Identification of beneficiaries is ongoing throughout the country to sort out all those in need of mosquito nets and also to be able to use this data to evaluate the efficiency of the program. The plan is to supply a treated mosquito net per two persons per household.
Female anopheles mosquitoes are known to require a blood meal as a vital ingredient in its reproductive process. As the mosquito feeds on human blood it transmits the deadly malaria parasite from one person to the other. Some four million people die of malaria every year, most of them Africans.
